If you want to put some label on a Christian, rather than call him "religious" (which he is not) call him a “Protestant” (which he should be). That means he protests that the Roman Catholic church imprisoned Galileo. He protests that they killed innocent Christians in the Spanish Inquisition. He protests that they embarked on the Crusades that slaughtered multitudes in the name of God. So, if you are offended by the above and protest such hypocrisy, even if you are an atheist, you are also a "Protestant" and that’s to be commended.
